Small homes should never be underestimated! A young family of four in Oreland were seeking a remodel to their 1941 brick colonial to better accommodate their needs. We started by removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, allowing for a kitchen expansion that now includes more than double the counter workspace, wall cabinets, large sink, microwave niche, and increased storage with large, deep cabinet drawers. We introduced a centrally located mudroom by eliminating a seldom-used shower and reconfiguring the bath into a powder room. The underused area at their rear entry was converted into a new butler’s pantry with serving and storage cabinetry, bar counter for entertaining, and beverage refrigerator. By replacing a window with a new French door to the rear deck, the family now has increased outdoor access, along with additional natural light from removing the dining room wall. The former dining room is now a flexible nook that still uses the family’s existing dining table, chairs, and bench.
The new interior palette includes classic green cabinetry complemented by light-colored quartz counters with shiplap backsplash for an English country look. Stainless steel appliances with pops of satin brass hardware provide a fresh, contemporary look that coordinates beautifully with the new red oak flooring and the rest of the home. Fun, colorful wallpaper in the powder room and home office reflect the client’s energy and style. The increased functionality, storage amenities, and bright, airy feel of the remodeled home create a welcoming environment the entire family can enjoy!
