Recently three of our design staff had the pleasure of attending a Design Forum in Carmel, California. Stephen Campbell (Design Manager), Samantha Pratt (Design Coordinator) and Katie Petruzzo (Draftsperson) represented Harth’s Design Team while meeting with four other design-build companies. Lewis Builders (Carmel) graciously hosted the event and we were joined by Redstart Construction (Chicago), Bailey Remodeling & Construction (Louisville) and Sweeny Construction (Madison, WI).
During a quick, but also demanding, three days, all five companies broke down their typical design process to not only provide guidance and advice but also with the intent to be critiqued. It was a powerful experience to witness companies who perform similar projects with similar goals, but go about them in completely different ways. It was definitely an eye opening opportunity for all parties involved, and each company was able to walk away with useful feedback on how to grow and improve. Harth Builders came away with many ideas on how to make our client’s design (and construction) process better than it is today.
Ed Earl, Principal of Priority 1 Projects (an Owners Representative and Construction Project Management firm), led the event with a rigorous 8 am-5 pm schedule. During one of the afternoons, everyone was able to visit three different Lewis Builders construction sites throughout the town of Carmel, CA. Our Design Team was blown away by the difference in climate, building materials, demographics and project schedules.
A happy hour was held at the last job site and all Designers were then taken to a local Carmel beach to watch the picturesque sunset over the Pacific Ocean. No sunset is complete without a beach bonfire either! Our team would like to thank Lewis Builders and the other firms for such a great experience. It is one we will never forget!
