Aging in Place

Remember when you first moved into your home? You were a young adult with a young family, and your days were a whirlwind of laundry, toys and children who needed to go to bed. It was and still is your dream home. As you’ve grown older, it’s become more challenging to navigate your home, and you find yourself relying on help for household tasks that were once easy. You don’t want to move to a retirement community or in with one of your children.

Harth Builders can transform your home and make it easier for you to maintain your daily living activities; safely and securely. Learn more about how an accessible design can change your life.

What Does Aging in Place Mean?

Many older adults and seniors don’t want to move into a retirement community or live with a family member. They prefer to live in their homes and age in place. For some, this is easy, but for others, they may need the help of a professional caregiving service to remain at home and independent.

In some cases, the right aging in place design for a home makes it easier for someone to live their daily life and take care of upkeep and maintenance on the home. First floor primary suite additions and accessibility features greatly enhance the quality of life for individuals with mobility challenges. A ground-level bedroom and bathroom eliminate the need for stair navigation, reducing fall risks and conserving energy. Zero threshold showers and shower benches allow for easy entry and comfortable bathing, even for wheelchair users. Lower counter heights in kitchens and bathrooms make daily tasks more manageable, while improved lighting and easily accessible switch controls enhance safety and independence. For multi-story homes, elevators or stair lifts provide effortless access to upper floors.

These thoughtful design elements work together to create an environment that promotes independence, safety, and comfort, allowing individuals with disabilities to navigate their homes with greater ease and dignity. By incorporating these features, a home becomes more adaptable to changing needs, ensuring long-term usability and comfort for its residents.

Harth Builders understands your desire to remain home for the rest of your life or as long as possible. We recognize that the refined adjustments our aging in place remodeling services offer play a crucial role in your chance to live your life on your terms.

  • enhances safety and reduces fall risks, which can lead to extensive injuries.
  • increases accessibility and mobility for a senior struggling with moving around their home.
  • improves quality of life for aging individuals by tailoring their aging in place design to meet their specific needs and challenges to independence.

Harth Builders takes pride in helping seniors who want to age in place find the solutions they need to remain independent in their homes.

Our Aging in Place Process

Because we are CAPS certified, we are specially trained to guide you to the right choices when building or remodeling your home for accessibility.

Our initial consultation will explore your vision and assess your home’s current safety and accessibility needs in order to develop an aging-in-place design best suited for you. Nearly all environmental accessibility adaptations include bathroom and kitchen renovations so we like to begin the process in those areas of the home. For the bathroom, we will begin by installing a zero threshold shower with bench seating along with grab bars for assistance. The layout of the room and doorways generally need to be wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, walker or mobile scooter. Non-slip flooring is installed as a safety precaution along with a lowered vanity including countertops and faucets.

For kitchen renovation, we generally utilize an open floor plan for ease of mobility along with non-slip flooring to promote safety. All countertops, cabinets, other storage, and appliances will typically need to be lowered or customized for accessibility. Grab bars are installed where needed, brighter lighting is added to increase visibility.

Our team is ready to meet with you and help you explore the possible accessible designs.
