The Highlands Mansion and Gardens located in Fort Washington is a 59-acre historic site including an 18th-century Georgian mansion and two acres of formal garden space. The Highlands Historical Society engaged with Harth Builders to renovate their vacant Gardener’s Cottage and turn it into a desirable rental property. The goal was to keep as much of the original charm as possible, while making it more desirable to modern day living. Our renderings reflect plans to remodel the interior by converting the existing kitchen into a mudroom, providing ample storage. The new kitchen is efficiently designed to accommodate an island that houses a sink, dishwasher and island seating, along with a bar area and beverage fridge. The first floor is topped off with a powder room, dining room, and family room area. On the second floor, the bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry room will accommodate today’s style of living. On the exterior, we’ll renovate the wooden front porch and add a rear deck, resulting in a newly reimagined cottage that compliments its beautiful natural setting.
