Requests to add the control of home automation to our projects is growing rapidly. This can range from a simple timer for outdoor lighting, to the ability to operate the majority of one’s lighting and audio/video from your smartphone. With so many choices, and so many possibilities, where do you begin? Online research can show you lots of neat stuff but often leaves you completely lost as to how to design, install and program a system.

The first step is to identify what you want to be able to do remotely. Is it as simple as turning lights on and off or do you want to be able to monitor your smoke detectors and alarm system? Maybe you want to control a variety of speaker zones and adjust their individual volumes and music choices. Or have shades automatically drop at dusk. Once you have an idea of what you want to do, you’ll need to consult with your Design-Build firm so that the proper coordination can take place during the rough wire phase.

The possibilities in this area of remodeling are growing at a rapid pace; be sure to get the right guidance before investing in a system of any size.
