Our Jenkintown client loved their compact 1920s home but some of the floor plan was a struggle for their young family of four. Space on the third floor was underutilized and accessible only by a non-code compliant stair via one of the bedrooms. The client hoped for an improved layout with a large shower and vanity in the small third floor bath. The largest of the bedrooms, treated as their primary, lacked sufficient closet space. To increase their usable space, a wall and trio of windows were bumped out so the primary stairs could access the third floor. The third floor was further reconfigured to offer a guest bedroom, full bath, home office, and storage. A pair of pocket French doors into the new home office carry light across the third floor and the fresh, welcoming aesthetic make it feel much larger than it did previously. A new French door at the existing second floor laundry room now brings additional light to the second-floor hall.
New wainscotting at the main level stair walls and handrail with a combination of stained wood and bright white paint now extend up to the third floor and are complemented by fresh, sky-blue painted walls. Refinished wood floors at the main level and second floor coordinate with the new wood floors at the third floor. The elimination of the secondary stairs enabled the addition of a full wall of closet space in the primary bedroom. The third-floor bath now boasts a contemporary layout with hexagon floor tile, wood vanity with storage, and large tiled shower with glass enclosure and built-in bench seating. Intentional structural changes, thoughtful floor plan modifications, and eye-catching while highly durable finishes have resulted in a beautiful remodel across all the three floors of the home – a truly successful project!
