Our Lower Gwynedd couple was preparing to add a third child to their young, busy family when they approached Harth seeking to finish the lower level of their recently-built home. They needed additional space to entertain as well as a suite for their out-of-town in-laws to join them for extended stays. Goals for their lower level included a tv viewing area, bedroom, full bath, gym, and bar/kitchenette. They envisioned a cozy yet contemporary space with access to their backyard via an existing walkout. The home builder had drywalled and insulated the perimeter walls of the lower level, however, they were concerned that the materials had been compromised by moisture during construction.
Harth assessed and addressed their moisture concerns as well as designed a gorgeous, creative floor plan that brought their dreams and goals to life. Conveniently located at the bottom of the stairs is a generous gym room for equipment, weights, and yoga complete with shock-absorbent rubber flooring. Opposite the gym entry is a spacious yet cozy living room area with a custom designed electric fireplace with slate surround and client-supplied vintage wood mantel and wall sconces. Strategically located within the largest length of the lower level and adjacent to the walkout double French doors, is the wet bar/kitchenette. Complete with a seven-foot island, full-height beverage refrigerator, paneled dishwasher, and ceiling-mounted glass shelving, the wet bar/kitchenette provides an exceptional space whether for early morning coffee, afternoon snacks, evening cocktails, or whatever suits one’s fancy!
To coordinate with the client’s classic taste and love of color, the finish palette includes rich verde green color drenching of the cabinetry, walls, ceilings, and trim moldings. The saturated earth tones are complemented with dark walnut island cabinetry, accent wallpaper, and satin brass light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and cabinetry hardware. A quartz version of soapstone was selected for the countertops for its dramatic appearance and its durable, low maintenance features. The wet bar includes a copper sink and oil rubbed bronze faucet that blend with the warm earthtones throughout the lower level. A fun but classic Sanderson wallpaper, Morning Gallop, provides whimsy in the generously-sized full bath with faux marble hexagon floor tile and subway tile, both with caramel veining. In the light, bright carpeted bedroom, an existing window was replaced with an egress-compliant window and a walk-in closet was provided. Luxury vinyl plank flooring in a light oak wood tone throughout the common areas of the lower level provides continuity and a striking contrast with the deep green color drenching. The family of five is now ready for extended-stay guests with this beautifully finished portion of their home that’s perfect for entertaining, hosting, and more!
