Our North Wales client was seeking remediation and a fresh, cohesive look to their back patio and adjacent in-ground pool. The existing patio included a mismatched combination of brick pavers, with weeds growing in between, and worn concrete with slab portions that were sinking, cracking, and pooling water so they could not be used for days after rain. The patio and pool also felt disconnected; an existing fence separated the outdoor living space from the pool area leading both to feel small. Multiple sets of lounge furniture and outdoor dining sets in various locations prevented the patio and adjacent areas from having uniformity. The backyard also lacked a covered area to avoid direct sun while entertaining or lounging.
Harth’s team carefully evaluated the existing layout and how our client dreamed of using their space in the future. What resulted is an incredible backyard oasis that integrates beautifully with the existing pool and rear of the home. A new pool cabana was introduced and carefully positioned adjacent and just beyond the pool for attractive site lines from many angles of the house and backyard. The cabana provides dedicated covered space for entertaining and watching Phillies’ and Eagles’ games while others swim in the pool or relax in the hot tub. Costs of site-built versus prefabricated cabanas were investigated with an ultimate decision to pair a RiverView Outdoor Products pavilion unit with interior features custom designed by Harth. Selected amenities and site-built components include weather-resistant NatureKast cabinetry, an outdoor-rated under-counter beverage refrigerator, generous bar counter with seating, pool equipment storage, and a changing room so guests don’t have to walk through the house while wet.
Immediately adjacent to the house, an Outdoor Elements pergola was added over the south-facing outdoor dining space that tends to get very hot in the summers. The pergola’s closable louvers and heaters make it enjoyable year-round, from bright summer days to cooler fall nights.
The modern, cohesive aesthetic of the new cabana, pool surround, and patio are reinforced by a uniform stamped concrete pattern that provides depth and texture while avoiding the expense of full stone slabs. An eye-catching black rail fence was installed around the perimeter of the new patio and pool surround for visual unity. The patio now includes areas designated and planned with sufficient space for furniture and flow for pool lounging, outdoor dining, and entertaining. New James Hardie board and batten siding in a striking deep blue provide the perfect contrast to the existing home exterior as well as a complementary backdrop for the new covered pergola.
This successful project will be enjoyed for years to come and incorporates numerous innovative design solutions and features to our very satisfied client’s beloved home!
